The climate crisis isn’t being solved, it’s being monetized
When Trump said he wanted to buy Greenland, it sounded absurd, but the idea wasn’t new. Powerful nations and companies have been circling the world’s largest island for years for a glimpse of their potential billions.
Melting icecaps are revealing shipping lanes that will shave thousands of miles off international trade routes. Freezing temperatures will make it cheaper for tech companies to cool down overheated AI infrastructure. Increasing geopolitical tensions make Greenland a necessary territory for global powers in the Arctic. And beneath the surface lie untapped reserves of critical minerals that will be needed for the next digital gold rush.
What gets left out of the headlines is who stands to lose. The Indigenous communities protecting their land, the fragile ecosystems already on the brink, and the rest of us, watching the climate crisis be repackaged as “good policy”.
While this may be the cause of environmental collapse, it’s also causing an emotional one. One more thing to carry in a world that keeps asking us to normalize the unbearable. As we continue to watch governments and companies prioritize profits over plant, a better future is still possible—if we choose to work together.
